Venous Ablation
Venous ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins. This advanced venous ablation technique employs radiofrequency or laser energy to close and seal the affected veins. Venous ablation helps relieve common symptoms of varicose veins, including pain, swelling, leg heaviness, and skin irritation.
How is Venous Ablation Performed?
Venous ablation is performed by a skilled radiologist using specialized equipment, including an ultrasound machine, a radiofrequency electrode or laser fiber, and a catheter.
Before the procedure, your radiologist will review your complete medical history and ask about any existing health conditions. You will also be asked about the medications you are taking, as certain blood-thinning drugs may need to be paused to reduce the risk of bleeding during venous ablation.
During the Procedure:
- Lie on the procedure table wearing a gown and protective glasses.
- The physician uses ultrasound guidance to locate the abnormal vein before starting venous ablation.
- Catheter is inserted into the vein under sterile conditions.
- Local anesthesia is applied at the insertion site and along the vein to ensure comfort during venous ablation.
- Laser fiber or radiofrequency electrode is advanced through the catheter to close the vein.
- Procedure is monitored continuously with ultrasound.
- Insertion site is covered with a bandage.
- Procedure duration about 1 hour, performed on an outpatient basis.
How does it feel During and After Venous Ablation?
Venous ablation is a safe and minimally invasive procedure for treating varicose veins. The treatment is performed under local anesthesia, so it is generally painless, though some patients may experience a mild burning sensation during venous ablation.
After venous ablation, you can resume most daily activities, but it is advised to avoid prolonged sitting or long-distance travel. Strenuous physical activity should also be postponed to prevent complications and support proper healing.
