Arterial/Venous Duplex
Arterial/Venous Duplex is a safe, noninvasive diagnostic test used to evaluate blood flow in the arteries and veins. Arterial/Venous Duplex uses sound waves to create real-time images and detect blockages, clots, or circulation problems. The procedure is painless, requires no anesthesia, and is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients can resume normal activities immediately after the test.
How is Arterial-Venous Duplex performed?
There are no special preparations required for an Arterial/Venous Duplex. This noninvasive diagnostic test is performed on an outpatient basis at our vascular diagnostic center. In most cases, you can continue your regular routine before your Arterial/Venous Duplex appointment.
You may be asked to remove certain clothing or jewelry. Depending on the area being examined, you may need to wear a medical gown. It is recommended to avoid tobacco and caffeine prior to the test, as they can affect blood flow and influence Arterial/Venous Duplex results. If the abdominal area is being evaluated, you may be instructed to fast overnight to reduce interference from intestinal gas.
During Procedure:
- You will lie comfortably on an examination table with your arms resting at your sides or across your abdomen.
- Your blood pressure may be checked before the scan begins.
- A clear gel will be applied to the area being examined to help transmit sound waves effectively during the Arterial/Venous Duplex.
- A handheld device called a transducer will be placed against your skin and moved to different positions.
- The transducer emits sound waves that travel through your tissues and blood vessels.
- The reflected sound waves create real-time images of your arteries and veins on a monitor during the Arterial/Venous Duplex.
- You may hear soft whooshing sounds, which represent blood flow within your vessels.
- The images are reviewed by a vascular specialist and may be recorded for further evaluation.
